WINNABOW, N.C. (WECT) – Construction is officially underway on a new, storm-resilient animal shelter in Brunswick County.

Paws Place has broken ground on its Sanctuary Shelter project following the completion of Phase 1. The two-story facility is designed to withstand the extreme weather and rising waters in southeastern North Carolina.

Crews are working through the remaining features, including:

  • Hardiplank installation
  • Finishing the electrical work
  • Finishing the interior, including walls and flooring
  • Installing the garage door
  • Installing the propane tank and generator, so the shelter keeps running when the power goes out
  • Installing the HVAC mini-split system
  • Installing ceiling fans and lighting
  • Painting
  • Landscaping
  • Completing final Brunswick County approvals

The rescue has raised $303,750 of its $315,000 goal. Click here to donate.

The rescue will continue sharing updates as the project progresses, and an official public open house will be scheduled after the remaining approvals are completed and the certificate of occupancy is received.
